I love birthdays

This week we celebrated our lovely Lucy’s birthday. I quite like making a big deal of their birthdays and try to make them special. I think it means a lot to have a big fuss made of them. This year Lucy had a cat themed birthday. I enjoy running with a theme thinking up games and a cake which fit. I also write a letter in a book which was given to them on their baby blessing. Its nice to think of all the wonderful blessings they bring to the family and tell them what I’m praying for them.

We had an all in service today at church and it was about being image bearers of God. When we went up for communion I said a prayer with Lucy just thanking Him for making her. Lucy then said

“I wish God had made me a fairy cat”

I just laughed but I thought afterwards I should have said I think God made you really special just the way you are. I missed the moment but just sharing incase this should happen to you! I do think its really important to focus their identity on being made in the image of God, His dear child, so incredibly loved just the way they are.

I’m challenged to look for opportunities to reinforce their identity in Jesus and also be careful not to lay negative identities on them. I say too often things like Lucy’s shy – which then means sometimes she thinks she can’t do things because she is ‘shy’.

Crazy cool family have a really good course on the Power of Encouragement and it talks about putting identity into your kids. Its worth a watch – you’ll find it on their basecamp website. Its free but you do have to sign up to access it.

Its also important our identity is found in Jesus. You are first a child of God, loved beyond measure and a parent second. When you hear ‘Mummy’ a million times a day its sometimes easy to forget that is not all you are!
